★ synopsis: Simon Snow just wants to relax and savor his last year at the Watford School of Magicks, but no one will let him. His girlfriend broke up with him, his best friend is a pest, and his mentor keeps trying to hide him away in the mountains where maybe he’ll be safe. Simon can’t even enjoy the fact that his roommate and longtime nemesis is missing, because he can’t stop worrying about the evil git. Plus there are ghosts. And vampires. And actual evil things trying to shut Simon down. When you’re the most powerful magician the world has ever known, you never get to relax and savor anything.
Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story — but far, far more monsters.
The plot of the book is kind of similar to Harry Potter, but different enough to where you could be sucked in and not constantly think about HP the entire time. It’s honestly much cuter than HP, (because of course, Rainbow Rowell wrote it) and I loved it. It’s a really great story line.
Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch is my love. I love him. Just a lot. I literally fell in love with him after his first sentence. He’s snarky and secretly a cutie and my favorite type of boy (dark haired and full of internal conflict) and I will love him forever (and he’s a sexy PoC get it my son). Simon Snow is such a loser and I love him for it! He’s very cute and very paranoid and very much in love with Baz and there relationship dynamic is wonderful. Penelope! Another PoC! She’s so perfect and smart and funny! Her and Baz’s relationship might be even better than Baz and Simon’s! She just gets along with everyone and she’s very cute and smart. I love these characters so much! Agatha however… eh. I totally accepted her decision in the end of the book, but the way she treated Simon, Penelope, and Baz on the way there made me really not like her. I just feel like her leaving could have been set up more thoroughly.
writing style: 5/5
The writing style is wildly different depending on the character, which is really nice because you can really tune in to characters on a separate basis and really relate to them as individual characters. It’s a really unique skill that not a lot of writers have, and I LOVE Rainbow Rowell for it.
It is an amazing book! The love story blossoming is pure gold, Each of the characters contribute to the story in the most perfect way, and the entire story is flawless. Carry On is such a good book, please read it!
